St Thomas Syro-Malabar Parish
St Thomas Parish
is a catholic parish of the Malayalee faithful in the
Syro-Malabar rite in Melbourne. Keralites, for various
reasons have migrated to various parts of the world. They
have found Melbourne also as good haven for living. Even
if they are migrating they do not want to cut of from the
homeland denying its entire rich heritage. They take their
patrimony especially the faith traditions with them wherever
they go. Ever since the number of catholic migrants increased
in Melbourne they wished for a parish of their own.
This cherished wish was fulfilled when Bishop Mar Gregory Karotemprel visited Melbourne in August 2004 and in consultation with Melbourne Archbishop His Grace Denis Hart established a canonical structure for the Melbourne Malayalee Catholics. Bishop Gregory officially announced this structure after the Holy Mass on the feast of Our Lady's Assumption on 15th August 2004. An ad-hoc committee had been elected to help set up this new parish structure.
In 2014, Pope Francis has established the new Eparchy (Diocese) of St. Thomas the Apostle of Melbourne of the Syro-Malabars (Australia), and has appointed as its first Eparchial Bishop Bosco Puthur, until now Titular Bishop of Foraziana and Curia Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Curia. Fr Francis Kolencherry will be first Vicar General of the Eparchy. Mar Bosco Puthur The Pope has also appointed Bishop Bosco Puthur, Eparchial Bishop of St. Thomas the Apostle of Melbourne of the Syro-Malabars as Apostolic Visitator of the Syro-Malabar faithful residing in New Zealand.
